When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenberg Church in 1517, he began the Christian Reformation. The 95 Theses, also known as Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences, were posted “for the purpose of eliciting the truth.” This reformation changed political and religious alliances for centuries. Martin Luther’s early works stressed salvation by God’s grace and Christian spirituality. Martin Luther argued against the Papal authority in matters of state. When he refused to publicly withdraw his statements, he was excommunicated by the Catholic Church. This act of excommunication gave rise to all Protestant churches. Thus, the Church was divided into two—the Catholic Church and the Protestant Church.
