RIP Asrani

Actor Asrani, who cemented a special place in the hearts of audiences through his portrayal of the eccentric jailer in Sholay and best known for his comic roles, passed away in a hospital in Mumbai on 20th October 2025. He was 84 years old. His full name is Govardhan Asrani, known popularly by mononym Asrani. He was in the Hindi film industry over five decades.  He is fondly remembered for his characters in films like – Sholay, Namak Haram, and Guddi.

On 16th October 2025 he was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai. Due to breathing issues, he passed away at 3:00 PM on 20th October. Asrani had acted in over 300 films in a career spanning over five decades. He has largely played character roles and has garnered wide acclaim for his impeccable comic timing.

The comical character in Sholay was modelled after Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator. Some of Asrani ji’s popular films include Bawarchi, Golmaal, Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, Hulchul, Deewane Huye Pagal, Welcome, among many others. His last rites were held at Santacruz crematorium, attended by family and close friends. His demise was not informed to anyone as it was his wish to kept it a private affair.
