What is happiness? Where is happiness? Can we say that we are happier than animals?
Happiness is in mind, people say. These very people also say happiness lies in contentment. How do we know it is true? We are yet to see a contented man! Most importantly the said contentment is subjective. It cannot be verified objectively.
Who can say that a rich man is happier than the coolie who toils day and night in the fields?
Who can say a person enjoying the worldly pleasures is happier than a person who has renounced them?
Who can say the learned is happier than the ignorant? Come to think of it, it is the ignorant man who is really happy in the world. That is why it is said “Ignorance is bliss”. An ignorant man is not haunted by thoughts. Also an ignorant man has no goals. Hence, he is not haunted by unreachable goals. His kind of happiness is the true happiness and it cannot be everybody’s lot.
