Introductory Note:
Who are the most important people of the last One Thousand years, i.e., from 1000 AD to 2000 AD? The phrase ‘important people’ are defined as ‘a person /s who changed the destiny of the world; defined the great stream of human history and altered our perceptions.
Let us remember them.
——————-
William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor. He is regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s pre-eminent dramatist. He is called England’s national poet and the “Bard of Avon” or simply “the Bard”.
William Shakespeare wrote 38 Plays and 154 Sonnets. A Sonnet is a poem of 14 lines. Through his writings he explored the complexities of the human soul and its unfathomable emotional range.
His writings or the themes of his writings are from romantic comedies to tragedies. His masterly use of language has captivated people for well over 400 years and will continue.
His work demonstrates a facility for wordplay, which no other writer did so before or since. William Shakespeare’s ubiquity on world stages, on film, in textbooks and in our vernacular is a vindication of his achievement.
There were plays before Shakespeare. But the way this writer has changed the face of the literary world makes him as one of the greatest men in the last 1000 years!
